Do you have to have a computer for js8call? Or is there any phone apps
It only runs on a computer. However, I run it on a 7" Panasonic FZ-M1 tablet with Windows or Linux.
What are the WoAD settings for your digirig lite and VX-6R? I am having some trouble with mine. I am using Amazon Fire Tablet with WoAD.
I'm sharing these settings two videos out. Friday after next.
I learned a lot. Thx
I so appreciate your knowledge, work & insight + the willingness to share what youve learned & developed. 73!
I just picked up a digirig lite and the cable for my ft2980r! Super excited to get it in the mail! My daily driver device is a Samsung s22+. Excited about this content you are putting out. Thanks!
Excellent. This setup works great with a Samsung Galaxy S22+. I have that phone, but pulled the sim card out to use it with my newer Ulefone Armor 18T (shown here). The integration with the FT-2980R is pretty straightforward.
Coming is: Woad is my phone
I'm looking forward to the longer video! That's some nifty hardware.
The hardware is nifty! Coming soon.
I thought the last feature was discontinued on APRS
You may be thinking about SMSGTE. There is a new text messaging services called "SMS" that has been introduced, but I will not use it until they make the definition of setting aliases for phone numbers more secure.
Running and transmitting is not something you will do. Nobody can understand someone if out of breathe and running. 45 mins is a very short amount of time to set up a kit. You have probably already figured out that you set it up for a couple hours, then go train with it or go for a run and some calisthenics. Then you might need to completely rearrange or atleast adjust and tighten. Do this over and over until you are completely confident it cannot be done better. Then you can look at taping up and cutting off unneeded material. Thanks for sharing all the radio vids
It might be helpful to upgrade the stock Yaesu 'rubber ducky' to a band-specific whip antenna - not much bigger, still flexible; better gain.
I carry a couple of mono band Smiley Antennas for just that reason. I don't keep it mounted permanently as they impact the IP rating and have more bounce during movement.
@@TheTechPrepper That's what I am talking about. ;) Something else I put on my Yaesu VX-8 was a BNC adapter for more choices and easy switching between whip, mobile, and shack antennas.
@@jamesalles139 I run the Diamond SMA to BNC adapter on all my Yaesu radios and actually had it in my pack attached to the Ed Fong rollup J-pole. Again, my personal problem, is a face whipping factor while running with anything bigger and a less rigid than stock rubber duck. When stationary, I'll switch antenna systems as needed.
be careful of high power mobile in a hybrid or EV - you don't want to scramble the vehicles' brains.
A js8call Android app is so unbelievably overdue i can't stand it! It's the difference between needing a small windows tablet and a much smaller android tablet in the field. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Just found your channel. Fellow Sonoran desert dweller. Good stuff. Watched your portable battery video. New ham here with a similar mindset. Looking forward to getting into more of your material. Did Field Day on the Rim north of Payson.
A really practical application of practicing your comms plans and targeted comms during contests and things like field day is that you get a taste of what things actually might be like on the air during a large scale disaster; overwhelmed and packed bands, people stepping on one another, miscommunication, possible poor band conditions, etc.
I have just ordered one, and hope I get it to work, as I know nothing about computers and software set up required for this unit. It will be a stab in the dark, to what menus I click on. If all fails, I will give it away to someone who can use it. Here, s hoping.
I’ve tried every single radio on the market and still go back to the 5R. I was assistant to the manager at radio shack for almost 2 years so obviously i know my stuff.
Hey tech prepper!!!! I know this is an older video, but I've been having difficulties finding a pouch for a 2730a. I want to finish my manpack build, I just cannot find a proper pack. Would you be able to steer me towards a good pouch???!? I absolutely appreciate all you do, we all do here. I've learned so damn much in the last year from your videos!! 🤘🤘
I use a somewhat rugged Chromebook for much of my ham radio stuff. Having Linux available makes it awesome as well. APRSDroid, WOAD, FT8CN, Meshtastik, and Rattlegram all function well. JS8Call is the missing link. Looking forward to your results. It may not fit your model, but getting it on the Play Store @ 5 -10 doll hairs would likely raise some serious funds.
I accidentally ran my Icom 2730A manpack with the armorloq rails at 15 watts with the signal stick and no tiger tail/counterpoise. The radio turned off instantly and did not turn on for about ten minutes. I was terrified and tried plugging and unplugging it to the battery a few times before it woke up again. I guess I blew one of those self-resettable fuses, but they go up in resistance every time they blow, so I'm still wary of even trying it again with a counterpoise. I thought the rails would be enough of a counterpoise for low wattage applications. My diamond antenna seems to work fine without issue even at 15 watts.
How do you charge it initially
They sell a charger that plugs into a normal 110V AC outlet.
Wait a minute! Did you just show that the Android phone is connected to the DigiRig Lite and then to the radio???? What? I didnt know that was possible. Game Changer!!! I have to try this myself.
You saw that correctly. I have it now working with the following apps: APRSDroid, Rattlegram, AndFlmsg and WoAD. I also have it working with multiple HT's and mobile rigs. I may have to do a mini series or an über video on all the settings for the radio, apps and phone.
The boafeng army had my laughing lol
It's fun when I can sneak those little sayings in there. ;-)
Manpack?
So when it comes out is it only going to work on the 818 or will it work with other radios (Eventually) like with a G90,891,857, and others of such?
If you are referring to EmComm Tools, it already supports the G90 and FT-857D. The FT-891 support is coming via the new DigiRig Lite. The will be released in ETC R3 this year.
GREAT info. 73 de AI4QT
Just wondering, does the TPA Frame fit in the Helicon E&E pouch without chopping off the bags lid?
It will fit in terms of length and width, but not height. The top cap will not fully close over the top.
Thanks!
Gaston … can you comment on the beartooth radios
Unfortunately, I have no experience with them and have not had any time to give them proper attention. If I do research them in the future, I'll be sure to share my thoughts here.
@@TheTechPrepper Expensive but very intriguing. I wish I could drop the cash on them … damn interesting!
Is this as close to a military manpack as we can get? I have been looking for a weatherproof HF radio to use outdoors and be able to withstand at least some rain
Absolutely not. These radios are nowhere near rated for any ingress protection. My Japanese manpacks (FT-858D and FT-818ND) are much more robust and reliable than the Chinese G90 shown, but they are not mil spec.
My Two FT-65's are my EDC Radios. They are VERY Tough, capable, and affordable. Yes, I could have a stable of Baofengs, but I want a Radio that is built to Spec, and I KNOW will work when I need it! There ARE Videos on RUclips that show how to do the keystroke mod to open its up. You setup a couple of these on an FRS or GRS Channel, and with 5 Watts, you can really get some distance.
I dabbled with dmr, but discovered the motorola DTR 550/650's and switched to to those for secure comms. The range is comparable, can send preset text messages, and are as secure as anything, the frequency hopping along with private groups are only going to be decoded by a government agency. They are small, have easily replaceable batteries and are easily sourced, can talk to group or individual radios. The only drawback I can really see (if you can call it a drawback) is in a shtf scenario interoperability with other groups or individuals will not be likely. But, that can be addressed by keeping a few extra radios for loaners. So I went the DTR route. Good luck!
I have a VX-6, and I Love it! I also have an FT-4, Two FT 65's and a VX-8. The VX-8 is in an EMP protected enclosure. I DO want a Second VX-6 as well. Since there are NO 220 MHz Repeaters where I live, there is a HUGE Tactical advantage to having that Pair! The VX-8 IS my Go To SHTF Handheld.
Bravo!
True offgrid testing👍
👍
Nice! I miss the Sonoran dessert. I went to school out there in Phoenix and spent about 2 years out there. We went up to Table Mesa Road, Lake Pleasant, Four Peaks, Sedona, and Flagstaff area regularly. Thanks for the video.
Those are all great spots. I am no stranger. Come back and visit.
FD, and other events need to have a section of frequencies for QRP, or at least 100w and below power limits.
100% agreed. That would be a great change to the rules that would help a portion of the Field Day QRP operators.
@@TheTechPrepperActually, the old Novice subband of 10M is 200w.
@@TheTechPrepperExtend to all ARRL operating events.
The Android app suite sounds like a fantastic project I am curious about Wxbot too
Slightly upsetting how expensive the battery kydex is.
It is pricey, but there are actually two US companies involved in the production of this product. The process is time consuming to produce based on what I know behind the scenes.
excellent video!
Glad you liked it!
Do you know if the HPG chest rig will also hold Binos, with the CCW comfortably?
Yes
@@turdferguson2863 thanks norm
It depends on the size, but it looks like there would be enough room depending on the dimensions.
Good stuff, Gaston! Field Day does have it's pluses and minuses. For me the biggest plus is getting out with other likeminded souls (Yes, some people do think similarly to me! 😁) and play with our toys. It's more of a social gathering with radios! I'm diggin' the new DigiRig! I look forward to seeing more! Take care, sir! 🍺🤠
I have a HPG chest rig. I wish there was a moisture barrier between your chest and the pack, but maybe that wouldn't work. It gets soaked all the way through. EDC needs a full clean every time. We hit 87F with 94% humidity. It was brutal. I slept in a hammock, the night wasn't much better.
Hand wash in Woolite!
TOM look up "body armor vent" the quarter sheet size
@@turdferguson2863 I probably going to try that, thanks. I just find it odd that it wasn't taken into consideration into the design. 5.11 skyweight chest rig at least has some mesh.
We're di U got the metal frame.?
What kind of antenna was on your right, the one with the big top load coil looking cylinder?
Why Summer FD when you have POTA 24/7? To me, POTA stations in parks are the real FD today
Hokas look interesting. But do they have to put A380 sized lettering on them? There are some places big labels on clothes are a no go. Places of worship. Sone company dress codes might prohibit them. Does EVERYTHING have to be an Mobil Ad?
I use a yellow hat with protective tail to cover the neck. It is the refective type people like flaggers in a road work zone use. I use mine going from car to/from buildings, or while riding METRO. Hand wash in Woollite keeps them from getting nasty REI should have some hats with wide brims, neck tail, and are UV rated.

I have two HPG SAR kit bags that I absolutely love, one in multiglam and one in Fifty shades of FDE.... I noticed you're running the pistol in the big pocket, what do you put in the holster pocket?
I'm really excited to see some info about the digirig lite. Thanks for the video!
I did "real" Field Day 2024 w/ bacon, chili cheese dogs, and cheese burgers. Oh yeah, a Yaesu FT-710 with 500W amplifier, Icom IC-746pro with 600W amplifier, Yaesu FTDX-10, on 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m dipoles. Most importantly, AIR CONDITIONING! This Florida boy with feel dehydrated and parched bone dry at 39% relative humidity. Glad you had fun!
I'm glad to hear you had a great time and enjoyed the weekend. My shack doesn't even come close to your Field Day setup. I guess I'm taking the "field" part too seriously.
Your dietary supplements of bacon, chilly cheese dogs and cheese burgers sound fantastic.😂
I just scored a QRP QDX from a buddy and i look forward to what you come up with a far as android apps. I was thinking of ruggedizing a raspi to take out and about. We'll see how that project goes. As always, thanks for the content, brother. 🤙🏾
